General Discussion / Jul-Sept 2018 Trading Post

It is at the printer now.

It should be mailed the week of July 9th. We always delay this issue due to the numbers of members who wait until the last second to renew. There has to be a cut off point somewhere. I think most of us will agree that we don't need to send out magazines to those who have not paid their dues.

It will be uploaded shortly to this website.

Sept-Oct 2018 is coming right along, and will be pubbed at its regular time.

Thanks.

U.S. Military / Can You Please ID these Navy rates and the metal insignia?
« on: February 01, 2018, 01:20:20 pm »
These were sent in to me.

Sailor was in US Navy 1942-46, and served on the USS Arctic.

....."I do know for certain (based on his separation document) that while in active duty, his final rate was "Fire Controlman 2nd class (technical)".  In the family files, we have his 3rd class rate badge (the 3rd picture), which would be his rate before he was promoted.  So I understand why we have this one.  But this rate badge, or his 2nd class badge on his uniform jacket (which we also still have) does NOT make him a CPO, correct?

Re the CPO badge: I have been told that this was probably given to him during training at Great Lakes.  Recruits may be given a rank during their training time.  When Dad 'graduated' and joined his ship, the rank he held during training becomes meaningless.  Is this correct?   And if it IS correct, then does it follow that he could no longer wear the anchor device (the 2nd picture) once he left training?

Also, nobody has been able to tell me what the square knot means on the CPO badge....."

U.S. Army / 370th AIB, US Constab
« on: October 12, 2017, 01:43:14 pm »
When the mission of the Constab changed from policing Western Europe to the defense of Western Europe, the Constab was beefed up with a number of combat arms units being assigned to the Constab.

The 370th AIB was one of these units.

Please scroll down to the "Classified" at the bottom of the Forum home page.

Thanks to our webmaster for getting this done for us.

This one speaks for itself. This is another one that has been misIDd through the years. We corrected the record on this one, and most dealers are honest about them - I said "most".

U.S. Army / Japan War Crimes Trial (WCT) patch
« on: June 21, 2017, 12:16:49 am »
This one has also been misID'd for decades. It was worn in the Philippines for the Manila WCT, which lasted all of two months in 1946. There is evidence that it is a Philippine Army patch, worn by one of two units (or maybe both), and Americans involved in the Trials were granted approval to wear it.

It was NOT worn in Japan for any of the Trials there. BTW - there were WCT held in many different countries following the war - Russia, China, Singapore, Australia, Nuremberg - and all the Trials were known by their geographical locations.

U.S. Army / 24th Cavalry Division - ONLY
« on: June 21, 2017, 12:12:51 am »
The patch on the left has been IDd as "21st Cavalry Division"; the one in the middle, as the 24th Cavalry Division. No one knows how this came about. Both are for the SAME unit, the 24th Cavalry Division. However, both of these patches as depicted were never worn. They were made for collectors; note they are both fully embroidered. The true period original 24th Cavalry Division patches are like the round one on the right, emb on wool.
